Women’s Boxing Evolution:
Is Claressa Shields the complete package?
If you think Vasiliy Lomachenko jumped in with the sharks quick, Shields first professional fight was on November 19, 2016 at the T-Mobile Arena, against future and current WBC Super Middleweight World Champion Franchon Crews Dezurn. In less than a year after turning pro, Shields was 4-0 and the Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion of the World. In 2018 Shields fought four more times and captured multiple titles in the Middleweight Division.
Saturday April 13, 2019 – Shields vs. Hammer in Atlantic City, NJ and live on Showtime
Claressa Shields vs. Christina Hammer will result in an undisputed Middleweight Champion.
Claressa Shields vs. Christina Hammer will be the Biggest Womens Boxing Match Ever and is sure to be a historic match.
Claressa Shields was supposed to fight WBO Middleweight Champion Christina Hammer (24-0) on November 17th to keep her supernatural pace going but the German had to postpone the fight because of sickness. Claressa instead fought two more times at the end of 2018 and now is a few days away from the biggest fight of her life against the mighty Hammer.
There has been some great womens boxers that set the stage for Shields such as Christy Martin, Ann Wolfe and Laila Ali. Trailblazer Christie Martin fought an incredible 24 years and became the first female boxer to be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame. Wolfe had a great nine year career with a record of 24-1. Laila Ali (The daughter of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali) has a terrific 8 year career retiring undefeated in 2007 with a record of 24-0.
The other big names in women’s boxing outside of Shields and Hammer include Cecilia “The First Lady” Brækhus of Norway. The Norwegian has been the undisputed, unified Welterweight Super Champion for the last five years, holding all the major titles. Brækhus is currently 37 years old and rated #6 P4P. Katie Taylor is a lightweight champion with a record of 13-0 and is Boxing Action Magazines #1 P4P Female Boxer. Also Amanda Serrano has earned titles in a record seven different weight classes and is currently ranked #2 P4P by Boxing Action Magazine. Serrano is currently fighting at a few less pounds then Taylor at the featherweight division.
Women’s boxing is in a current revolution, with Claressa Shields, Christina Hammer, Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano, Cecilia Braekhus and Heather Hardy who is coming of a big win against a very game Shelly Vincent in a terrific featherweight championship fight on HBO last October. Sheilds and Hammer are much bigger and more powerful then the other names mentions and the winner of Shields/Hammer fighting the lighter greats is very unrealistic as they would simply dominate the small women (similar to Spence vs Garcia).
Will Claressa Shields be the Michael Jordan of basketball and launch the sport to a whole new level?
Womens Boxing is still far from were it should be and has a long hard uphill battle to climb. But like they say, Rome wasn’t built in one day.
If anyone can do it – It’s The Shield, Claressa Shields
The combination of her accomplishments, age, talent, trashing talking skills, focus and handlers has Shields perfectly positioned and primed to take the boxing world by storm. Besides having all the boxing tools including youth, she has surrounded herself with people who have her best interest in mind. Dmitriy Salita of Salita Promotions has set Shields on the fast track and Manager/Advisor Mark Taffet is second to none when it comes to managing athletes. He is very detail oriented and makes sure everything, everyday is going well.
We are watching history in the making, I look forward to Claressa Shields taking us to places we thought couldn’t be reached.
It all starts this Saturday as Shields and Hammer get it on. Two undefeated fighters, in there prime, in the peak shape of there career let the leather fly.
I can promise the fans that after watching the fight this Saturday, they will love the sweet science even more – As Boxing is the Best sport in the world.
