What we Learned in 2018:
Maurice Hooker:
Jr. Welterweight Champion Maurice Hooker is a must see attraction. (140 & 147 has a ton of talent)
Boxing Division Depth:
It feels like boxing is really rising as not just the welterweights, but all the boxing divisions are starting to have alot of depth. currently there are great match-ups to make in every division and the future of boxing looks bright.
GGG & Canelo:
These two put on a great fight in September. Canelo’s not afraid to challenge himself and take on the very best and GGG is still the best at 36 years old.
Wilder & Joshua:
These two are the best two heavyweights in the world and need to get it on. Enough with arguing and talking who the A-side is. We don’t care about the details – Eddie Hearn has to get this fight done (no excuses).
Light Heavyweight Division:
Lots of talent but moving at a snails pace.
Charlo Twins:
Everyone has these Lions rated high and see’s them as the future of boxing. December 22nd showed two things. 1. They are very serious about their careers and they train very very hard and come into fights in tiptop shape. 2. They’re overrated, Jermell lost to a good Boxer (tough decision) and Jermall I believe totally got outclassed at 160. I think they should be very carefully matched in 2019 and be let out of the cage in 2020 when they can hand boxers better and not only rely on power.
Cruiseweight Division:
On November 10, 2018, the division has its day in the sun and did not disappoint. With that said, the division is still clearly the weakest in boxing and the top dog (Usyk) is not P4P worthy.
Terrence Crawford Isolition:
With all the top welterweights with Al Haymond, Crawford is deligated to fighting second-tier guys like Luis Collazo.
Kell Brook seems to be stuck in no mans land and when it comes to fighting the elite, he might be all done.
Deontay Wilder proved he’s a top heavy weight by knocking out Ortiz and taking Fury to the limit. In one of the most underrated heavyweight match ups in recent time, Wilder KO’d a determined and focused Bermane Stiverne in 1 round. I don’t think anyone else on the planet could have done that except Wilder that night. Wilder doesn’t weigh that much for a big heavyweight and his chin is still on tested but I believe his biggest problem is stamina, he is simply a very skinny guy and will naturally tire out in the later rounds.
The boxing landscape and broadcasting rights is currently in the state of interruption like a volcano, things are starting to settle with many different platforms to watch boxing.
P4P lists are great but in reality pound for pound guys with the exception of the very small fighters bantamweight/flyweight are very rare. P4P was Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, GGG & Ward, but a lot of these guys currently on the list (Lomachenko/ Crawford/ Spence/ Canelo/ Usyk) have MUCH to Prove.
2019 will be a lot of fun!!!
