Luke Campbell has been ordered to fight Ukrainian star Vasyl Lomachenko for the vacant WBC lightweight title.
The 31-year-old is the WBC mandatory challenger and had been waiting to find out an opponent for a title fight after former belt holder Mikey Garcia opted not to make a defence, instead being listed as ’emeritus’ champion by the governing body.
But the WBC have now announced that Lomachenko, the current WBA ‘super’ and WBO champion, will attempt to add their own belt when he fights Campbell.
A WBC statement read: “The WBC board of governors has finalised the process and has determined the final ruling regarding the lightweight division status.
“The WBC has accepted Vasyl Lomachenko’s petition to fight for the WBC lightweight title.
“A fight between mandatory challenger, Luke Campbell, from UK and multiple weight division champion, Vasyl Lomachenko, from Ukraine, with the vacant WBC lightweight championship on the line, is officially ordered.
