Like every year, the hometown of Santiago Tianguistenco will celebrate the life and career of boxing idol Salvador Sánchez via a tribute on August 12, 37 years , after his passing.
Following tradition, the day will begin with a mass in the famous Church of Santa María del Buen Suceso , located in the town square where Sanchez was baptized and where he was also given the last goodbye on August 15, 1982 by more than 50,000 people.
After the Mass, a brief ceremony will be held in the cemetery in front of Salvador’s tomb where family and friends gather to sing songs and share some words and anecdotes of one of the greatest Mexican idols.
To conclude the celebration, an amateur boxing card is held and also traditional food is served by the Sánchez family which is free.
For his brother Sulio, it is very important to continue with this tradition because it is not only to remember an all time great fighter, who became a legend, but also to bring the people of Tianguistenco to the noble sport, at which Salvador excelled.
