The Middleweight divisions top guys are very evenly matched. With many of the big names in the middleweight division currently contracted to DAZN, Jermall Charlo seems to be out in the cold. Even though welterweight Terence Crawford is isolated from the rest of the welterweight stars, many believe he is either the top guy or #2 in the entire division. I am not sure that is the case with Jermall Charlo who barely got by his last opponent – Matvey Korobov when the two headlined the Barclays Center, Brooklyn two nights before Santa made his rounds.
Boxing Action Magazine’s Top 10 Middleweight rankings – April 2019
1. Gennady Golovkin
2. Canelo Alvarez
3. Daniel Jacobs
4. Sergiy Derevyanchenko
5. Jermall Charlo
6. Matvey Korobov
7. Demetrius Andrade
8. Kamil Szeremeta
9. Magomed Madiev
10. Rob Brant
1. Gennady Golovkin at 36 years old is still the top dog. He has dominated the division like few have in all of History and has nothing left to prove. With so many young, hungry, strong and fast boxers coming on, GGG days are surely numbered.
2. Canelo Alvarez probably lost the first fight to GGG, but came up with a strong Mexican Style fight in the rematch. Some believe it was a draw and some believe Alvarez pulled the win out. What ever you believe, Canelo is the biggest star in boxing and current ruler of the middleweight division. His boxing record (opponents) is quickly becoming legendary.
3. Daniel Jacobs, The Miracle Man is loved and respect by all in boxing. A gentleman in every sense. Jacobs has the most power and speed in the division- one good landed punch and it’s over. But does he have the energy to stay busy all 12 rounds if he doesn’t catch his opponent with the big shot. Can he let his hands go or is he to drained (fighting his body) to stay at 160.
4. Sergiy Derevyanchenko is a terrific boxer who some believe outboxed Daniel Jacobs in there fight for the IBF Title. Derevyanchenko landed some great shots and was the aggressor in the fight, but got caught early in the first round by a shot to the temple. Derevyanchenko will be a player in the division for a longtime to come.
5. Jermall Charlo got to headline the Barclays Center last December along with his brother Jermell who lost to Tony Harrison. Harrison was dressed in a tiger suit and Matt Korobov game out to the Eye Of The Tiger song. What better way to counter a lion then with a Tiger. Jermall’s hard work and training in the gym got him the win against Korobov. Korobov was the more skilled and natural boxer but Charlo’s conditioning is second to none and never let up. Charlo has to take some of his worldly energy and spend some of it improving his boxing skills instead of most of it getting in tremendous shape.
6. Matvey Korobov put on a terrific show and boxing clinic back in December against Jermall Charlo. Korobov showed that he will live up to his potential and that the KO he suffered against Andy Lee 6 years ago was nothing but a little setback.
7. Demetrius Andrade – Boo Boo is currently a world champion and is getting better every time he steps in the ring. His career path is similar to Charlo in that his matchmakers are being very careful and are slowly building him up. Andrade and Charlo talk a real good game and are great talents but time will tell how they do against the very best in the division. Andrade has the whole boxing world infront of him, he needs to continue to stay smart and move up slowly instead of jumping in there with Canelo or GGG, he’s just not ready yet.
Honorable Mention: Gabe Rosado is a bit undersized, but given proper rest and time to train, he can bang with anyone.
