The Lion that can’t be Tamed – A King
In recent months, DAZN has showed that it can tame the biggest cats of the jungle by throwing large sums of money at them. DAZN signed Canelo Alvarez to a huge record breaking $365 million/11 fight deal. Then a couple month later, DAZN caught another Big Tiger – paying a kings ransom to Gennady Golovkin.
DAZN has shown to be the supreme hunter in the new age of digital/ subscription content. But, no matter how hard DAZN tries, there one Cat that can’t be tamed. This lion proclaims himself a King.
When the DAZN idea was created, when DAZN launched, they had one goal, to be the best and to dominate the Boxing ( and Sports) market by investing now to see returns later. DAZN has gone after all the big boxing free agents (thanks to there deep pockets) and next on the list was the self proclaimed King: The Lion Deontay Wilder.
DAZN rolled out the red carpet for Team Wilder in New York and offered him more money then one can fathom, only to be rejected and heart broken like a high school boy getting dumped by his high school sweetheart.
In the Process of DAZN trying to sign Wilder, they realized that big game hunting (this game of broadcasting boxing) is much richer & harder then they thought. In that spirit DAZN decided to double there monthly subscription fee from $10 per month to $20 per month starting immediately.
DAZN got there first real No, they backed up a truck filled to the brim with money and thought they were prepared for the hunt of there life, only to have the trucks tires blow. The Bow & Arrows they bought for the hunt were insufficient.
Question is how will DAZN react to there failed attempt to tame the King Deontay Wilder? Maybe they will realize, some lions are better left to roam in the Wild.
With Showtime drastically increasing there Boxing budget and ESPN refusing to get bullied by anyone, the Game has changed.
Wilder got offered a flat fee last year of $15 million and now the offer went to $40 million (to fight AJ), next year he’ll probably turn down $70 million and in 2021 when they offer Wilder $100 million – the real negotiations will begin. Remember the longer this takes and the more mainstream press coverage this gets – Wilder’s price goes up. He might never have to fight again – just play the waiting came. The sports world has changed alot, while fans just want to see the best competition, for the athletes it’s all about branding and maximizing there contract. While it is annoying for fans not to see the best fights, playing the waiting game while the press gives the boxers tons of free notoriety – is the best way to get paid big.
