On the night Serena Williams blew a fuse and demanded an apology, Boxing Saturday bought us good boxing events from around the world. None more surprising and impressive as the perfect fight Shawn Porter and his camp planned and executed.
I want to give a shout out to Brian Custer and the entire Showtime Crew for hosting and delivering a great night of boxing from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Heavyweights Kownacki and Martin put on an action packed, fan friendly fight. Not to mention the final round, round 10 is a round of the year candidate. Also Cuban Yordenis Ugus showed his skills against a game César Barrionuevo.
Danny Garcia Vs. Shawn Porter:
The main event did not disappoint as it was action-packed. After splitting the first half of the fight three rounds a piece, Porter surprised most by using very good boxing skills. It seemed that Porter was using up an awful lot of energy as Garcia still remained fairly fresh.
Round 7: Porters energy and work ethic won the round but it just seemed Garcia was one punch away from knocking Porter out.
Round 8: Again Porter stays very busy and wins the round, but started doing some very dangerous jumping in.
Round 9: Garcia starting to time Porter, even round or Garcia by a hair.
Round 10: After Garcia wins first two minutes, Porter battles back to close the 10th well.
Round 11: Porter dominates the round and has one more round to go to the champion again.
Round 12: Close round won by Porter, I believed. And the Judges get it right.
Congratulations to Shawn Porter for shocking many boxing analysts and becoming new WBC Champion. Well earned.
Hats of to Danny Garcia as he prepared and fought well. The way Porter maintained energy for 12 rounds was absolutely remarkable and he really won the fight because he stayed busy, not to say he didn’t box well.
Current Top 10 Welterweights:
1. Errol Spence Jr.
2. Terence Crawford
3. Kell Brook
4. Manny Pacquiao
5. Keith Thurman
6. Shawn Porter
7. Danny Garcia
8. Jessie Vargas
9. Jeff Horn
10. Lucas Matthysse
Brook last fought at 147 and has only lost to Spence (GGG fight for welterweight ranking doesn’t count). Thurman really needs to fight somebody, Matthysse says he’s retired but still ranked. Guys like Berto, Peterson and Broner are still in the top 20 in the world. Khan is no longer in the top 20 Conversation. Mickey Garcia should stay at 135-140 because currently he is to small to compete with the top 10 welterweights.
Congratulations Shawn Porter!!!
