The pro debut of Gerardo Gonzalez, known thereafter as Kid Gavilán, happened at the Arena Cristal in Havana, Cuba. That night he defeated Antonio Diaz by points in 6 rounds. He would continue his career in the United States where he became world Champion.
Kid Gavilan is considered as one of the best boxers born in Cuba. He faced the very best welterweights and lightweights of his time including: Sugar Ray Robinson, Carmen Basilio, Ike Williams, Bobo Olson, Tony DeMarco, Johnny Bratton, Johnny Saxton and Gil Turner
