On this day in history, Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo starred one of the most impressive lightweight battles
May 7, 2005
Diego was lightweight champion and Jose Luis was the WBC champion. None of them was prepared to cede an inch or back down a fraction. Mathematics aside, it added up to a relentless slide rule slugfest, which was both awesome and terrifying in its intensity.
Knocked down in round ten, Diego lost his mouth guard, gasping for air. Back down on the canvass from whence he came, Diego spat it out again and was deducted a point by Referee Tony Weeks. Utterly impossible for an ordinary mortal to understand exactly how Diego managed to get up for the second time…yet he did, to nail the advancing Jose Luis with a perfect right hook, trapping him on the ropes and dredging his final reserves of fortitude to deliver a raining molten cascade of punches, with Tony Weeks wading in to save a stricken, ashen Castillo. An incredible test of courage and willpower, and a victory against all the odds!
