Nothing Wrong with Shields saying she can Beat GGG.
We have been talking about women being able to beat men in sports for generations. In tennis we had Phil Neer vs The great Helen Wills Moody in 1933. In 1973 Billie Jean King beat an old Bobby Riggs. Just recently there was talking in the combat sports world of Ronda Rousey being able to beat most men.
We are the generation that loves imagination. We are the generation that memorized almost ever line in the Nemo Movie. We are the generation that make superhero movies the biggest movies of all time. And we are the generation that follows every second of every move of the Star Wars saga. Why? Because we love having fun and love imagining.
So the universal women’s Middleweight Champion of the world says she can hang with the men and social media starts to flip. In reality can she give GGG a run for his money. Probably Not. But maybe she believes she can.
Can you think of an athlete in any sport in this day and age that has separated themselves from the pack as much as Clarissa Shields? She if so far ahead of the #2, it’s not even close (Tiger and Federer did it for a while) . Back in the Day when Babe Ruth dominated it was a different time, with little coaching and videos to study. In this day and age with 7 billion people on the planet, what she’s doing is nothing short of utter worldly.
Shields will probably dominate the sport for the next ten years and the critics will say she had weak competition like they did with Roy Jones Jr. and Gennady Golovkin and so many others like Iron Mike Tyson. All an athlete can do is take on the best that is available.
Who are we to ever tell someone they can’t do something. Who are we to tell our daughter she can’t be the President of the United States one day. Who are we to tell our son that he can’t be the richest man in the world one day if that’s what he wants to be.
This world is changing faster than at any other time in its history. With technology running on us so quickly Internet -cell phones etc. There are still many places in the world were women are not allowed to own property. I can tell you Stories you wouldn’t believe.
Here is this black girl who is the undisputed boxing champion, A woman fighting for fans to take the sport just as serious as they do men’s boxing. Is it too much to ask to take women’s boxing just as seriously as we take women’s wrestling or woman’s combat fighting or women’s tennis or woman’s basketball?
I sure do hope Clarissa Shields imagination keeps running wild, it’s refreshing to see someone say what’s on their mind instead of having 20 managers like an NBA player telling them what they’re allowed to say and what they’re not allowed to say.
I was recently did an interview with Clarissa Shields before her big fight with Christina Hammer and it was a terrific interview. I posted the interview; and some people commented some real dumb stuff. Some people said she was too cocky or she comes across the wrong way.
I say to those people the following: sorry she didn’t go to an Ivy League school like you did, sorry she’s not as perfect as you. Shields doesn’t spend time drinking tea in a fancy hat with clouds painted above her head. She wasn’t raised with a silver spoon.
When most of us try to dig deep every night to find the remote control or to go downstairs and get a glass of water before bedtime she’s digging deep doing those extra push-ups and sit ups.
We will always have complainers, people who always nitpick and see every single teeny thing that they don’t like, I tell you what; you keep complaining, let Shields keep pushing.
If Clarissa Shields thinks she can fight with the men, all the more power to her – You go Girl!!!
