The Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden has regained the top spot as being the King of hosting Boxing. The worlds most famous arena has been at the forefront of boxing for almost 100 years.
On December 11, 1925, MSG hosted its first world championship bout, Light Heavyweight Champion Paul Berlenbach fought Jack Delaney in a classic.
The Mount Rushmore of Boxing – Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong and Joe Louis fought a combined 49 times at the Garden. The atmosphere before and during some of the big fights at the Garden is indescribable.
Many greats have fought at the MSG including Emile Griffith, Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott, Rocky Marciano, Hands of Stone Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard and Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto called the Garden home for most of his career.
20 years ago (March 1999) Evander Holyfield fought Lennox Lewis in a classic Heavyweight Championship Fight. In September 2001, a much anticipated fight between Bernard Hopkins and Felix Trinidad was also staged at the Garden.
The Fight of the Century between undefeated World Champions Joe Frazier (26–0, 23 KOs)
and Muhammad Ali (31–0, 25 KOs) took place at Madison Square Garden on March 8, 1971 and is widely considered the Greatest Fight of All Time.
With MSG focusing more on Basketball, Hockey and concerts over the last 30 years, hosting boxing events in Atlantic City NJ, Las Vegas and most recently the Barclays Center Brooklyn has been popular. But as in life, there are trends and as the boxing landscape is changing to make boxing more mainstream-MSG is back. MSG seems to be in favor with many of the big boxing promotions (Eddie Hearns-Matchroom Boxing, Bob Arums-Top Rank and Óscar DeLa Hoyas-Golden Boy Promotions).
After hosting the IBF Middleweight Championship Fight last month between Daniel Jacobs and Serhiy Derevianchenko, MSG is featuring Canelo Alvarez and Vasyl Lomachenko in December. Also in early 2019 another Top P4P Boxer- Terrence Crawford will be in action at the worlds most famous Arena.
MSG will have to be a fighting champion as Arenas such as the Barclays Center (Brooklyn), T-Mobile Arena (Las Vegas) and the Staples Center (Los Angeles) are all looking to take the title in 2019.
