Mairis Briedis vs Krzysztof Glowacki at Arena Riga, Riga, Latvia in the WBSS semifinals and for the WBO Cruiserweight Championship:
After a feel out first round, Mairis Briedis and Krzysztof Glowacki have one of the oddest round of boxing you will ever see.
Glowacki hits Briedis with a blow during the hold while referee Robert Byrd called for a break. Briedis comes back and hits Glowacki with a huge dirty Elbow shot that might have knocked Glowacki equilibrium off as he laid on the canvas motionless – face first while the referee deducted a point from Briedis. The referee yells at Glowacki to get up and fight.
The round continues with both guys slugging it out and Briedis hurts and sends Glowacki down. Glowacki gets up and the fighting continues. The bell rings, but the 74 year old referee Robert Byrd didn’t here the bell. One of the corner men from Briedis corner actually comes into the ring and starts waving at the referee that the bell has rang. The Robert Byrd acknowledges the fourth man in the ring and lets the two fighters keep fighting as Briedis lands some heavy heavy shots that sends Glowacki down and basically out of the fight.
Nobody really knows what to make of the round as there is a tremendous amount of confusion as the referee goes and tells the ringside crew he couldn’t hear the bell and that they have to ring it louder or better.
In an entertaining third round slugfest, Briedis hurts Glowacki again and as Glowacki makes the count, the referee puts an end to one of the oddest and weirdest fights you’ll ever see.
With what I saw in the fight it makes me realize that the WBC made a great decision not to sanction the fight and put up the WBC world championship belt.
