A discussion about Terence Crawford, his boxing career and skill:
Terence Crawford is currently 3 division champion and currently an undefeated Welterweight champion. No doubt this young gun has the talent to back up some of the hype that has been created around his name.
Question is how much is it pure talent / boxing skills and how much of it is the Mammoth Sports machine of ESPN marketing:
There is no doubt the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, ESPN has gotten so big and powerful it seems that whatever they say becomes the holy grail, Fans listen to these big media outlets and believe every word they say. “If ESPN said it- it must be true”.
I don’t understand how we can rank a fighter top pound for pound when he is fighting nobodies.
For example, Tyson fury is fighting undefeated heavyweights but they have no skill or experience, GGG just fought Steve Rolls who was undefeated, but most people realize that GGG vs Rolls was a no contest to begin with. But when Crawford fights, we cut him the slack and don’t degrade his opposition.
Terence Crawford is fighting nobodies:
Most boxing fans and critics see Crawford as the best pound for pound or certainly in the top five, I’m not buying it.
Crawford’s next opponent is Egidijus Kavaliauskas. Kavaliauskas book cover looks nice with a record of 21-0-1, 17 KOs. But the truth is he hasn’t fought anybody. His biggest test was a mediocre fighter by the name of Ray Robinson. That fight turned out to be a majority draw snooze fest.
Who has Terence Crawford truly beat?
What is so special about his boxing skills?
And most importantly who is in the pipeline to even fight him?
We may never have the answer to this argument as Terrance Crawford is only fighting C+ and B level fighters. Also Arum refuses to have Crawford fight top competition unless it’s Errol Spence Jr.
It might take years to settle this arguments – it’s not worth getting slammed over.
Crawford/ Kessler Similarities:
I believe Terrance Crawford & Mikkel “The Viking Warrior” Kessler boxing style and possibly career might be similar if Crawford steps up and starts fighting the elite welterweights in the PBC promotional group.
Mikkel Kessler was a highly touted 168 pound undefeated champion, using his 1-2 long form and setting up the big power punch with his wide stance. Crawford’s generic / robotic style is very similar.
When Kessler fought the great warrior Joe Calzaghe, it became clear that he simply wasn’t as good as touted. Kessler then was the #1 seed in the Super Six Tournament and got schooled by a P4P boxer by the name of Andre Ward.
Whether it’s Manny Pacquiao running circles around him or Errol Spence Junior keeping him at the edge of his jab, Terence Crawford is simply not ready to compete with the top dogs of the Welterweight division.
August 2019 Top Welterweights:
- Errol Spence
- Manny Pacquiao
- Shawn Porter
- Danny Garcia
- Keith Thurman
- Terence Crawford
Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker Will now be competing at 147. There should be no excuse of why Crawford can’t fight Hooker and also Brook has been begging for that smoke as Well.
Top Rank needs to truly show Crawford belongs by matching him up against real competition.
Sometimes boxing can be very comical. I mean here we are touting Crawford as the best boxer since sliced bread, and the fighters that are being floated to face him are guys like Luis Collazo.
They want Crawford to defeat guys like Egidijus Kavaliauskas, Amir Khan & Luis Collazo and make us believe he’s the best.
