Floyd Mayweather Jr. normally fought on the Saturday in September before Mexico’s Independence Day. After Floyd’s retirement Canelo Alvarez took the date.
What was first disappointing to hear from a fans perspective has turn into a blessing in disguise.
The anticipation built as we thought we would get Canelo Álvarez vs Gennadiy Golovkin 3 on September 14. As the days, weeks and months past, it became apparent that Canelo wasn’t interested in the epic trilogy fight with GGG.
Alvarez’s Team- Golden Boy Promotions Scrambled to find an appointment for Alvarez, but a combination of not finding the right fit and frankly being tight with the wallet caused Golden Boy to push of Canelo’s next Fight and lose the Mexican Holiday Date much to DAZN & the fans disappointment.
Canelo Alvarez was also upset with the proceedings and let his voice be known on social media. It was very surprising to all that GB couldn’t find a suitable opponent for Canelo Alvarez even though they have had that particular date reserved for well over a year.
Canelo dropping the September 14th Fight date caused an avalanche of promoters to take the heavily coveted date. Top Rank will have must see boxer – Tyson Fury headlining in Las Vegas. Golden Boy has young star Jaime Munguia & social media darling Ryan Garcia In action in Carson, California. Matchroom also jump in on the action staging a big show on September 13th @ MSG, NYC. Star Boxing was the first to officially announce a card on Super Saturday, putting a host of boxers on a terrific card at World Resorts Casino in the Catskills, New York.
With all this action, it looks like Canelo dropping the date was for the betterment of the sport. Maybe this Saturday will show that having multiple shows on Mexico’s Independence Day is the best route to take in the future.
