Looks like Golden Boy Promotions back is against the wall and might have no choice but to take on Gennady Golovkin this September.
After seeing that Demetrius Andrade and Errol Spence won’t be ready for September, Canelo has three choices for September.
- Fight Jamie Munguia – the two issues; 1. Munguia is a Golden Boy fighter and they don’t want to deteriorate his stock. 2. Canelo will get lots of backlash for taking an easy fight.
- Fight a top 168 pound champion- the two issues; 1. Canelo it’s ready to take on the bigger guys yet. (he will be ready by 2021). 2. A loss will make Canelo look bad.
- Fight an old GGG, prove he’s the best and finally move on. DAZN wants the fight and Canelo can use the fight as leverage to control his future destiny if he fights GGG.
There are some internal disagreements at Golden Boy Promotions on what weight Canelo should face GGG at if they meet in the ring this September.
Saying that the Golden Boy Promotions brass will keep a close w on GGG’s performance on June 8th is a gross understatement.
Some at Golden Boy think that keeping the fight at 160 pounds would weaken GGG as Golovkin at his age is struggling to make that weight. Others in the company think that 165 or 168 is better as Canelo is the naturally bigger man and Canelo’s strength will really standout at the higher weight.
The fear is fighting GGG at 168 will make the older warrior feel fresher and more energetic.
One thing for sure, Golden Boy will be using all available resources to study GGG in June.

CANELO & DAZN MISUNDERSTANDINGS CONTINUE:
Some of the biggest battles in boxing are done behind the scenes. As Canelo celebrates his new record breaking contract with DAZN, there is major trouble brewing.
Unlike Gennady Golovkin and Anthony Joshua who will take on anyone to show the world and themselves they’re the best, Canelo is a bit more cautious and moves at his own pace.
Canelo has been the A-Side ever since facing Miguel Cotto and he has set the dates, Opponents, weight and every detail that he wished for including the money split between the fighters. He has worked hard to get the privilege of being in complete control and Canelo and Golden Boy don’t see it any different.
DAZN is throwing out big money at prize fighters hoping to make some of the biggest fights in boxing. Instead of putting those fights on PPV they are hoping people will subscribe to DAZN and pay the monthly or yearly fee. DAZN wants to make the fights exclusively on DAZN and are guaranteeing some of boxing’s stars big money.
To entice these boxing superstars to sign with DAZN they are giving them multi fight contracts with some of the fights being tuneup fights but getting mega fight money.
With that said, DAZN needs to please the fans and give them the big match-ups to get new subscribers. DAZN thinks their in charge of the fighters they have contracted and can make fights as they please. Canelo thinks he’s still in charge and does what he wants.
Bottom Line:
DAZN wants Canelo vs GGG at 160 in September.
Canelo does not want that fight in 2019.
