Teofimo Lopez beats Diego Magdaleno ending the fight in the 7th round with a brutal KO.
Sergey Kovalev puts on a great performance neutralizing Eleider Alvarez and taking back his world title. What a come back fight for Kovalev, that was sensational!
Kovalev took Alvarez to school tonight!
February 9th: A Tale of Two Super Featherweights:
In the shock of this young year, Andrew Cancio Knocks Out Alberto Machado in the fourth round leaving Golden Boy Promotions and the DAZN subscribers shocked. The Explosive Man didn’t look well prepared and being late to the arena didn’t help matters. Andrew Cancio was a 15-1 underdog and became champion in front of his family and friends. Congratulations Andrew Cancio.
While the big upset happened, a stones throw away was the star studded PBC Family watching Tank Gervonta Davis dismantle Hugo Ruiz. And what a show it was with Floyd Mayweather talking to Davis before and after the elaborate entrance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. The entrance was well thought out and a terrific addition to the show.
Davis’s Performance solidified his spot as the number one super featherweight.
What Machado and Freddie Roach were working on in training is beyond me. Machado was easy to hit with no head movement and his Body was jello. Way to lay an egg on your first headlined Card.
2/10 Jose Ramirez got by a game Jose Zepeda by decision. Ramirez is going to have to step up his overall game somehow to beat the top guys at Jr. welterweight sush as Regis Prograis and Mighty Mo.
2/15 Rob Brant TKO’s Khasan Baysangurov in the 11th round to retain his WBA title. Brant stay busy Stlye was to much for Baysangurov to handle.
2/16 Leo Santa Cruz took care of business by beating Rafael Rivera in a 12 round UD. Rivera showed much grit especially in the first 5 rounds and then Cruz’s size, volume punching and ring generalship took the rest of the fight over. Two class acts putting the gloves on.
Also Omar Figueroa Jr. fought for the second time in over 3 years beating John Molina Jr. in a 10 round UD. They put on a heck of a show and the feeling was the fight could swing either way at any second with a single punch. They both had less steam on there punches thou- in the later rounds. Both looked a bit over the hill but make no mistake that Figueroa and Molina are warriors and it’s an honor to watch them fight.
2/23 was a Huge Fight Night with Boxing cards being featured around the world. The the O2 Arena, Chris Eubank Jr. bloodied and dominated James DeGale. DeGale retired from the sport the next day. Joe Joyce has his coming out party by putting a good showing against vs. Bermane Stiverne at the O2 Arena, London. He TKO Stiverne in the 6th round catapulting his name to one of the top contenders in the heavyweight division. Where does that leave Stiverne? I think Stiverne vs Big Baby Miller ( Once Joshua dismantles Miller) would be an entertaining fight and keep the winner relevant since the Heavyweight division is weak interms of depth. Also Anthony Dirrell captured the WBC super middleweight title by beating Avni Yildirim In a technical decision. It seems that when ever Dirrell fights there’s always some type of controversy.
March Boxing Madness:
In a mad month of boxing, Matchroom will have a great card on March 9th, at The Turning Stone Casino Featuring Light Heavyweight Champion Dmitry Bivol facing tough Joe Smith Jr. and also one of Boxings newest sensations WBO champion Maurice Hooker takes on much respected Mikkel LesPierre. Also in March we will see the rejuvenated Shawn Porter in action. Also Undefeated 3 division world champion Kōsei Tanaka will make his return after fighting against Sho Kimura in a fight of the year candidate back in September to win the WBO flyweight title. And the Granddaddy of them All, undefeated welterweight champion Errol Spence Junior Will take-on undefeated multi division champion Mikey Garcia in the palace that Jerry Jones built.
