Yuniel ‘The KO Doctor’ Dorticos qualified via a devastating one-punch 10th round knockout of Andrew Tabiti, while Mairis Briedis stopped Krzysztof Glowacki in round three, Saturday night at the Arena Riga in Riga, Latvia.
Dorticos picked up the vacant IBF cruiserweight World title against the American slickster on his way to the battle for the Greatest Prize in Boxing, The Muhammad Ali Trophy.
In Season 1 of the World Boxing Super Series, the Cuban knockout artist suffered his lone career loss, a 12th round semi-final stoppage to Murat Gassiev.
“We came for the knockout,” said Dorticos. “Not to take anything away from Tabiti, he came prepared but I returned to the tournament to win the whole thing.”
The Latvian crowd was heard cheering for the tournament number 2 seed in the later rounds of the bout.
“I think I earned my applause here, Latvia! I gave you all another big knockout.”
In the other semi-final of a sensational doubleheader in Latvia’s capital, number 1 seed Mairis Briedis won the awaited clash versus Poland’s Krzysztof Glowacki with a third-round stoppage.
The hometown hero floored the Polish warrior three times before ending the wild brawl 27 seconds into the third round.
“I will now return to camp and regroup and prepare for Dorticos who is a really strong fighter,” said the all-action fighter who lost a majority decision at the Arena Riga to Aleksandr Usyk in last year’s semi-final.
This time around he made it to the final and he reached out to his fans in his final message.
“Thank you to all my fans in Latvia! I did not want to let you down.”
The Cruiserweight Final of Season 2 of the World Boxing Super Series, Briedis vs Dorticos, will take place in the fall.
