Algieri, who is no stranger to the world title stage, is looking to claim his second piece of the 140lb. crown, having won his first world title in Rocky-esque style, defeating the heavily favored RUSLAN PROVODNIKOV at the Barclay’s Center in 2014.
Chris Algieri comes into the fight against Tommy Coyle under a bit of pressure to win as there is no room for excuses. He is 3-3 in his last six fights and all theee wins come by decision. I believe Algieri got gifted a decision based on name recognition in his last fight back on the 18th of January against Danny Gonzalez.
Gonzalez was the aggressor and dominated the fight with Algieri only fighting in spurts and mostly running the whole fight. Gonzalez was frankly robbed. Algieri looked weak and weight drained in the fight and didn’t have much gas in the tank. In the post fight interview, Algieri blamed his performance on a few factors that to most fans sounded by excuses.
He had a golden opportunity to fight Maurice Hooker with a win in January, but he looked so unimpressed that fight didn’t make any sense. It will be interesting to see if we get the young fresh Algieri tonight that beat Provodnikov 5 years ago or will he reveal that Chris Algieri was only a one hit wonder.
Round 1. Good feel out round for both fighters. Both guys are determined and really have something to prove.
Round 2. Tommy Coyle (Boom Boom) comes out strong and tags Algieri with some good shots that almost out Algieri down. To the New York’s credit, Algieri stands his grounds and takes it and fights back instead of running. Algieri with a good flurry at the end of the round.
Round 3. Excellent round of boxing for both fighters. It seems that both fighters are prepared to go to war and are willing to go out on their shield. Both men being aggressive and staying busy. Very entertaining fight thus far.
Round 4. Half way through the round Algieri lands a huge body shop which really hurt Coyle and sends him to the canvas. Coyle beats the count and finishes the round very strong. What a fight!!!
Round 5. Both fighters pace is slowing down a bit but both of them are landing some very good right hands. Algieri being smart and still focusing on the body and Coyle throwing mostly head shots. These boxers are letting the leather fly at MSG.
Round 6. What a round! It’s a wonder they call Boxing, The Hurt Game. The last minute of round 6 was 100% action with both fighters giving as good as they took. Algieri’s left eye is starting to look very bad.
