BILLY JOE SAUNDERS and Callum Smith could end up fighting in a world super-middleweight unification bout sooner rather than later.
That’s according to Frank Warren, Saunders’ promoter, who claimed the fight would be easy to make.
Saunders won the WBO world super-middleweight title against Shefat Isufi last month at Stevenage Football Club, and called out Smith afterwards.
Smith, who currently holds the Ring Magazine, WBC Diamond and WBA world super-middleweight belts, produced a brilliant display to beat Hassan N’Dam at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
His trainer, Joe Gallagher, insisted that their target for his next fight was Canelo Alvarez at Anfield with Scouser Smith a big Liverpool fan, but that seems unlikely as the Mexican looks set for a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin later this year.
And Warren told iFL TV that he believes the best fight for both men would be to unify their belts, while suggesting the fight could easily be made.
“From our end, it’s not an issue,” he said on Wednesday. “It’s an easy fight for me to make.
“They’re both champions, so it’s a 50/50 deal. Straight down the middle. They both bring something to the table, they’re both super British world champions.
“It’s a great fight, a great fight for the fans, not a problem with me. One phone call and it’s done.
“The money won’t be a problem, it’s 50/50. Let’s just split it down the middle and it’s done.”
Warren then claimed to have made an offer to Gallagher to make the fight, but responding on Twitter later in the day the trainer denied a proposal has been made.
Gallagher tweeted: “I have received no offer.”
But Warren said: “We’ve made an offer to them, I spoke to Joe Gallagher, his trainer.
“He told me that his next two fights are already planned out, although one of them has gone, so he’s got another one. Then there’s talk about it next year.
“But Callum isn’t going to make super-middleweight next year, Joe knows that, so let’s get it on.
“He had a super win at the weekend, beating Hassan N’Dam, so that sets it up for him to be in a big fight.”
