After a disheartening back injury gave Ryan Burnett his first loss against Nonito Donaire six months ago, Burnett made his ring return today against tough Philipino Jelbirt Gomera at beautiful cozy Ulster Hall in Belfast, Ireland.
In front of a packed house Burnett showed off his rare and special talent of speed, power and toughness. Referee John Latham called the fight in the 6th round after Burnett landed two body shots on Gomera. Gomera tried to sell the punches as low blows, but Latham wasn’t buying it.
The Good:
Burnett looks healthy and eager to chase another Title. Burnett’s speed and power are terrific and he is a warrior. Burnett got a nice win today to start the road back to becoming world champion.
The Bad:
Burnett often fought with his guard down, relying on talent instead of boxing technique. Burnett was very hittable and ate a lot of leather. Burnett’s head movement is the best part about his defense, but it is not enough to avoid punches when fighting the elite boxers in the bantamweight division.
