As Sergey Kovalev gets ready to fight Anthony Yarde in Russia on June 29th, we take a look at The Mighty Crusher:
Not that long ago Sergey Kovalev, “The Crusher” was one boxing’s biggest stars and an HBO staple. Kovalev was an undefeated Champion with Super boxing skills and power.
He was on every Top P4P list, often thought of as unstoppable, so much so, many picked the Great unstoppable Kovalev to beat undefeated P4P Great Andre Ward back in November 2016.
Many boxing journalist thought that Kovalev gave Ward everything he could handle in their first fight and won the fight on points.
After getting stopped by Eleider Alvarez in August 2018, much of the mystique associated with Kovalev -The Crusher was gone.
After hearing everything from Kovalev being too old to Kovalev being a shot fighter, The Crusher reinvented himself in February of this year by being more of a boxer then a knockout artist/ brawler and regained his WBO light heavyweight title by beating the tough young undefeated Colombian in their much anticipated rematch.
Kovalev not only beat Eleider Alvarez, but took him to school, so much so, he has regained his rightful place as the king of the light heavyweight division in many boxing journalists eyes.
Make no mistake their are many young guns and future stars in the division. But on this day, in this moment Kovalev still stands tall in the division and remains the man to beat.
Sergey Kovalev might not be feared as The Crusher any longer, but he is still what everybody boxer and every competitor wants to be.
Sergey Kovalev is King of the Hill
