With Bad comes Good and with Rich comes Poor, that’s the Balance that will always be there.
Let’s look at Boxings Expansion -The Watered-Down effect and what it means for the future:
Boxing’s Biggest Problem is not the promoters building walls, it’s the Arenas demand for Event Dates and the Networks needs of countless Fight Nights.
Content Hungry Networks and Arenas (expansion) is why we are seeing a washed down-weak boxing product.
Remember, Promoters aren’t in the business of turning down money, if networks need/want content the promoters will keep dividing the talent pool until supply is met.
Boxing’s Expansion and washed down main events now – will pay tenfold down the road.
The Good, The Bad, The Future
The Good: Boxing is the healthiest it has ever been. With countless boxing cards every weekend around the world and major networks and Arenas wanting more dates and bookings, boxing has positioned itself as the biggest up and coming major sport – in terms of growth by percentage.
Virtually every Saturday night , you can watch a terrific live card on DAZN, ESPN or Fox & Showtime. The influx of money from bigger budgets and the Deep pockets of DAZN and ESPN have given boxing an Incredible Hulk Jolt. So boxing fans, sit back and enjoy the sweetest sport there is – Boxing is as Pure as Honey.
The Bad: With so many Arenas wanting a set number of events coupled with the demand the Networks need, there simply isn’t enough talent to go around. The heavy demand for content creates a lot of mismatches as the latent pool keeps geting divided; and more importantly lack of motivation from the athletes, managers and promoters to make the best fights. Promoters rarely want to put there big starts in major risk as they and there boxers are happy making a steady living headlining network cards and boxing in front of ten or fifteen thousand people. Promoters have the pressure and responsibility of having fight cards prepared on a consistent basis – Similar to McDonald’s responsibility of making sure they have burgers stocked everyday to make not only there customers and employees happy, but also there shareholders and investers. Just like a restaurant, Boxing doesn’t have an end game every year – such as a Super Bowl or World Series. Boxings current solution to the watered down product is to advertise each boxer and event to death – which is working well for the casual fans, but not the Hardcore Fans – who know better.
The Future: Fans frustrations of the best fighting the best now will really pay of in the future. With boxing talent in higher demand then doctors, boxing gyms are springing up around the planet faster then we can count. In the next 10-15 years, the amount of talent will be so rich in every division it will make the current Welterweight division look like chump change. The Heavyweight division will be the fastest to prosper from this and in about five years, we will be shocked at the plethora of talent. You will always have some elite boxers playing hard to get and promoters building walls, but the pool of talent is going to be so rich it won’t matter and the upsets are going to make you hit your hands on your living room ceiling.
As already stated: Promoters aren’t in the business of turning down money, if networks want content the promoters will keep dividing the talent pool until supply is met.
