The accolades continue to pile up for the unified World Heavyweight Champion as he wins the ESPY Award for his title-winning, TKO victory over Anthony Joshua on June 1.
Congratulations are in order once again for unified World Heavyweight Champion Andy Ruiz Jr. “The Destroyer” absolutely killed it at the 2019 ESPY Awards, winning the “Upset of the Year” award for his seventh-round TKO over previously unbeaten Anthony Joshua on June 1 at Madison Square Garden.
Other candidates in the stacked category included Old Dominion’s shocking win over No. 13-ranked Virginia Tech in college football, Naomi Osaka defeating tennis legend Serena Williams at the U.S. Open, and the Columbus Blue Jackets sweeping the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the NHL playoffs.
Ruiz’s victory stood tall above the rest. He was a heavy underdog against Joshua, the unified champion. But save for a flash knockdown in the third, Ruiz dominated. He rose from the canvas to hurt Joshua, dishing out two knockdowns of his own in that same frame. He then proceeded to control the action, flooring Joshua two more times in the seventh to become the new heavyweight champion—making him the perfect choice to win the 2019 ESPY’s “Upset of the Year.”
