Former WBA super featherweight champ Alberto Machado recently exercised his rematch clauseagainst Andrew Cancio, who knocked “El Explosivo” out two months ago in one of the year’s bigger upsets to date. Though the rematch was planned for June 8th, it is now set for June 21st to make room for Gennady Golovkin’s DAZN debut against Steve Rolls.
Golden Boy president Eric Gomez also told ESPN that WBO light flyweight champion Angel Acosta (20-1, 20 KO) would make his fourth title defense elsewhere on the card.
Machado (21-1, 17 KO) was anywhere from a -1000 to a -5000 favorite in places heading into their first fight, having KO’d Jezreel Corrales in a wild scrap for the belt and defended with dominant victories over Rafael Mensah and Yuandale Evans. Cancio (20-4-2, 15 KO), who was smashed by JoJo Diaz in his previous step up, wound up surviving an early knockdown to pummel the Puerto Rican into submission in four.
Machado has been adamant that the weight cut severely hampered his performance and mulled a move to 135. The weigh-ins for this may be worth watching.
