WBC light flyweight female champion Yesenia ‘’La Nina” Gómez, 16-5-3, 6 KO’s retained her title against Debora ‘’Pantera’’ Rengifo 13-6-1, 7 KO’s from Venezuela at the Plaza de Toros in Cancun.
A huge ovation during the introductions for Yesenia who’s the local heroine.
Yesenia who’s trained by Ruben Lira made use of her greater height and reach with a punishing left jab in the first and some wide sweeping right hooks against the brawling Deb.
A very big right hook from the Champion in the second to the head visibly hurt her challenger and she also more accurately got the better of a wild exchange just before the bell.
Yesenia backed Deb on to ropes in the third and was head hunting to good effect, occasionally picking up the odd jarring right hook herself.
Yet the champion’s defense has improved. She timed a stinging counter right to the face, brushing a pigtail from her own face in the process, then parrying a desperate charge and turning the tables with an effective counter attack in the fourth
The Venezuelan slipped against the ropes in the fifth, but the champion classily backed off instead of taking advantage.
Yesenia continued to press the attack’s in the sixth with harder jabs and combos and as the bell rang deb shook her head in frustration.
Effective to head attack in the seventh. The champion was pursuing a more elusive challenger who had tasted her power and was evading it.
A huge attack with the challenger backed into the ropes brought dividends in the eighth. With a multi combination the champion battered her to the canvass and she got up for an eight standing count.
Stung by a big right hook in the ninth Yesenia fought back with grit against a still dangerous swollen face opponent.
In the final round went for the KO while keeping her boxing together. Far better technically she had dominated throughout, to win a well deserved UD, 97-92 twice and 99-90.
